Frequently asked questions
Shine is an elegant activity monitor that you can wear anywhere. We designed Shine to inspire people to become more active, and encourage people to set goals for how much they want to move in a day and complete them. Wear it with different accessories available (clasp, sport band, leather band, necklace) for different wearing locations and to different occasions (formal, business, casual, sleeping, swimming).
Width 27.5mm x Depth 3.3mm x Height 27.5mm with a weight of 9.4g. The device runs on a coin cell battery which lasts about 4 months. Shine is water-resistant for swimming.
People who take the initiative to become more active are much less likely to develop health problems in the future. Shine is a gorgeous device that will empower people to be more proactive about their personal health.
You can buy Shine now on our online store and we expect to ship out in late August.
Shine estimates your total calories burned each day, which includes: (1) calories related to your physical activities like walking, running, swimming, etc; and (2) the basal metabolic rate (BMR) of energy needed just to keep your body alive.
The calories consumed by your physical activities are based on their duration and intensity, which are measured by Shine's three-dimensional accelerometry system. BMR is estimated from your height, weight, age, and sex. Since BMR usually accounts for the vast majority (at least 2/3) of calories we consume daily, one can typically expect the majority of calories on the app to be a reflection of BMR, with a more modest contribution from physical activity.
One technical point is that strictly speaking, BMR only includes the calories needed to maintain our vital organs (e.g. brain, heart, lungs, etc.) at rest but does not include the energetic cost of digesting the food we eat (that's right, it takes calories to consume calories!). This adds about another 10% to the combined energetic cost of rest (BMR) and activity. Shine takes this into account as well in estimating total calories.
Here's an example: if your BMR is 80 calories per hour (about 2000 cals/day), then syncing your Shine at noon would show about 1000 calories even if you haven't done any physical activity. If you did walk for 30 minutes in the morning, you might burn an extra 100 calories; a 30 minute jog might earn you a couple hundred calories depending on your pace etc. We wanted to show you your caloric expenditure, but we recognize that activity-related calories become easily dwarfed by the BMR. And studies suggest that independent of calories or other factors, physical activity itself is among the most important contributors to an individual's well being -- that's why Shine's primary display is activity points, a reflection of physical activity, pure and simple. No activity, no points; lots of activity, lots of points. It's that simple.
We are continuously refining our algorithms and calculations based on increasing data and research. Stay tuned for upcoming infographics with more information on caloric expenditure, basal metabolic rate, the thermal effect of food, and the benefits of an active lifestyle.
Shine is water-resistant for swimming and the anodized aluminum will cope with tough conditions. However, constant exposure to salt water is expected to reduce the device’s working life, but that’s to be expected of any device in those conditions. With appropriate care, there shouldn’t be a problem.
We built Shine to survive the most extreme of conditions, and while we don’t recommend that you do this often, the Shine should be fine getting run through the spin cycle.
With our necklace, wristbands and clasp accessories you can wear Shine anywhere - hip, wrist, neck, chest, waist, shoe, bra, etc. However, you will find that certain locations may give better results for certain activities. For example - if you wear Shine on your wrist while biking, it will not record much activity since your wrist doesn’t move very much.
It's a common problem to lose small things, especially when you're wearing them. We think that by making something beautiful and useful like Shine, you’ll be less likely to lose it.
Shine uses a standard CR2032 coin cell battery. You will be able to order replacement batteries on our website as part of our battery replacement program. If you can't wait, you can also buy these batteries at supermarkets and online retailers (e.g. Amazon, Walgreens, etc.).
Of course. A special tool for battery replacement is included in the Shine packaging. If you lose your tool, a flat-head screw driver or eyeglass repair screwdriver is recommended. Check out our Battery Replacement Tutorial Video for more information.
There’s no need to charge it! Just switch out the batteries about once every four months (or when the battery stops working).
Well, only if they make you look like Tron (though a few people might think it’s cool). We’re working on products that we think people will really like to wear. As far as radiation is concerned, Shine generally emits less than 1/10,000th the amount of electromagnetic energy of an average cell phone.
Shine uses a high precision 3-axis accelerometer to track your activity.
So far, we have focused on tracking walking, running, swimming and cycling. But if you do other kinds of activities, the Shine will automatically do its best to give you credit towards your goal. This means that we will automatically give you credit when you play soccer, but if you lift weights we may not give you all the credit you deserve. We'll be expanding on the set of activities we'll be able to track on an on-going basis, allowing you to customize the app based on your own activities.
Sure, but we don’t recommend it since the algorithms might not be accurate for pets.

We're open to collaboration! We're going to be opening up our API later in 2013, and we look forward to integrating with other great products. If you have any ideas, please sign up as one of our Troublemakers at www.misfitwearables.com and post them there. If you are looking for collaboration opportunities, drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The 'Troublemakers' are people who've signed up on our website to give feedback and ideas. There's an occasional newsletter, access to the Troublemaker forum, and behind the scenes access in the app. We've loved the feeling of community and mutual support from our Indiegogo supporters, and this community is something we'll continue to develop.
The Misfitopia App presents a collection of people and ideas from antiquity to modern day who embody the spirit of unconventionality and boldness that inspires us here at Misfit Wearables. We don’t condone every misfit or comment on whether their contributions have been positive or negative, only that their unconventionality is something that inspires us. Each misfit comes as a card and is illustrated as a caricature by local artists. On the back of each card is a quote or factoid associated with the misfit. The app will notify you when a new misfit is delivered every few days, and is available for free on the iTunes App Store. If you have an idea for a misfit, let us know at email@example.com.
Yes, you can download it directly from the iTunes App Store. Stay tuned for regular updates with new features, performance improvements, and additional languages.
We plan to release an open API later in 2013. Go to www.misfitwearables.com to sign up for notifications on when we’ll release the API.
Shine tracks sleep, but doesn’t track stairs climbed.
You can sign up by going to the top bar on the latest app and tapping on the friends icon or world icon. You can sign up using Facebook, or you can sign up on your own. You will need to create a profile that includes your name, a username and a thumbnail photo so that your friends can recognise you.
No, you do not need to sign up with Facebook in order to use the Shine social features. If you do not want to use Facebook, you can sign up by tapping on the “Don’t have Facebook” link at the bottom of the Social sign up page. If you have already connected with Facebook, we will be allowing you to unlink your Facebook in our next app release.
With the social features, you can compete with your friends with fun notifications sent to your phone and a leaderboard where you can get a snapshot of where all your friends are at. You can also check out our world feed to view the milestones and achievements from the Shine community.
Privacy is very important to us here at Misfit. We do not share any of your personal information with anyone without your approval. By signing up for the social features, you agree to share your profile (name, username, thumbnail picture and achievements) with your friends.
If you choose, you can also opt into sharing your profile, achievements and milestones with the rest of the Shine community. If you ever want to change your privacy setting, you can go to your profile at any time, tap edit, and turn the sharing of your milestones and achievements in the World Feed to off.
Once you have signed up with social, you can always add friends by going into your profile, tapping on the ‘+’ and searching for friends by their username. Once you found your friend, you can request them as a friend. Also, if you have connected with Facebook, we will notify you via an app notification when a friend of yours is on Shine so you can add them as a friend.
The World Feed is a place where you can view the milestones and achievements from your fellow Misfits. It shows you what the Shine community is up to. You can choose to show your own achievements in the World Feed so you can participate in being a part of the Shine community.
If you choose to opt into the World Feed, we will show your profile (name, username, best streak, personal best and total goals hit), and any milestones you just hit, such as when you hit your goal or if you are on a streak. You are listed in the World Feed at the time of your sync.
You can edit your profile by going into the friends or world feed view, and tapping on the profile icon on the top right of the screen. Tap on edit, and now you can edit your profile photo, name, and add new friends. For the time being, you cannot change your username, but you will be able to edit this in our future releases.
Your username is used to identify you to your friends and the Shine community on the Shine app. Your username needs to be at least 6 characters long and can only contain letters, numbers or an underscore.
At the moment, our app does not allow you to change your username. However, we will be introducing this in our next app update. So stay tuned for that.
Sorry to hear that, we're actively working on improving the syncing experience. In the meantime, here are some possible solutions:
1. Fully close the shine app. First close the app by pushing the home button on your iPhone. Now double click the home button to bring up the list of apps running on your iPhone. Press and hold your finger over the Shine app icon, wait for the icons to start wiggling, then click the red exit circle on the Shine app icon. Click the home button again to return to the home screen. Now reopen Shine and try to sync again.
2. Turn bluetooth on and off on your iPhone from the iPhone Settings menu.
3. Turn your iPhone on and off.
4. Open and close Shine with the battery tool.
5. Replace Shine's battery.
6. Make sure the battery is correctly oriented. The negative terminal should be visible, it is the side without writing on it.
In order to see your progress towards your goal, you need to double tap Shine. Try holding Shine up against your skin when you double tap it. It's easier to double tap Shine against soft surfaces.
Additionally, make sure Shine is powered correctly. Did you remember to put the battery in? Make sure the battery is correctly oriented . The negative terminal should be visible, it is the side without writing on it.
Then you need to get moving! This means you are 1/12 of the way towards your goal. As you move more throughout the day, more LEDs will light up to show your progress.
When you close the shine, the “12” indicates the position of 12 o’clock LED on the top side. This is to help you orient the Shine appropriately for reading the time.
The Shine app will give you instructions for upgrading Shine’s firmware so that your Shine’s performance will improve over time.
By default, the clock does not show on the Shine. To enable the clock, make sure that the clock option is set to ON in the ‘My Shine’ menu of the app. After that, double tap your Shine. Your progress will appear first and the clock shortly after. Dots representing 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock light up faintly as reference points. Then a solid light appears to show the hour and a blinking light appears to show the minutes.
Yes. The sport band can accommodate wrist sizes of 16 cm to 23 cm (6’’-9’’).
There are many accessories for the Shine including a Clasp, Sports Band, Leather Band in Black or Camel (available soon), and Necklace (available soon).

We wanted to make an activity monitor that was so beautiful, people would wear even if it wasn’t working. The sensors and pedometers that are currently in the market are perfectly capable of tracking movement but are not highly wearable products because of material choices, fit, shape, etc. We were motivated to fill this gap, so we came up with Shine. Shine is composed of only durable, premium materials (aircraft-grade aluminum). It breaks away the complexity of a highly engineered wearable sensors and presents information to the user in a simple and intuitive way.
Our delay (a total of 15 weeks) was due to us deciding to make some key design improvements:
1) We are now using 12 larger white lights instead of the 16 smaller lights we had before. The larger lights are much brighter and more visible in the daytime.
2) We changed the geometry of the holes created by the micro-laser drills that now make the lights much brighter.
3) We revamped our communication framework to enable firmware upgrades. Previously we couldn’t get enough bandwidth.
4) We made Shine a lot more water resistant.
5) Shine now has a clock function.
Shine did not satisfy Kickstarter guidelines because it’s a health and fitness product which are categorically prohibited there. That said, it was a no-brainer based on the superiority of Indiegogo’s platform and how amazingly they treat start-ups. They had much better support. Indiegogo has more frictionless payments, a faster growing audience, and most importantly, a purely meritocratic system vs. a system that was subject to editors’ whims.
We wanted to prove there was demand for Shine before we released it. In the end we had nearly 8,000 funders on Indiegogo from 64 countries and all 50 states in the US.
It’ll be a highly wearable product that will measure a number of interesting health signals. We’re hoping to release it early 2014 and hope you’ll like it too and will wear it all the time.
We don’t outsource to Vietnam; in fact, much of our advanced research and development happens in Vietnam. We do industrial design, hardware, and some data science in the Bay Area. We do our advanced work in Vietnam because of the ready availability of talent with great attitude and work ethic. Many of our team members out of our Ho Chi Minh City office are winners of international math, physics, and informatics Olympiads and are literally the very best minds in Vietnam, a country of nearly 100 million people.
We’re always in the market for talented people who share our values. Check out our jobs listings here: www.misfitwearables.com/jobs We’re looking for people with wisdom and world-class skills who are genuinely excited about our mission to make great wearable products.
Misfit invents and manufactures highly wearable computing products.
We happened to be founded on the day Steve Jobs died and were inspired by the “Here’s to the crazy ones” Apple commercial. We also liked the name because all of us at some point in our lives have felt like we didn’t fit in, and now we finally have a home with like-minded friends and colleagues at the company.
Use the Shine app to send an invitation to a friend. They'll receive a $50 coupon code to make the purchase of a Shine on the Misfit online store by January 31st 2014. Once they complete the purchase, you'll receive $25 credit for use on the online store by March 31st 2014.
There are a few rules to keep in mind:
- - First, your friend must use the $50 coupon from the invite to purchase a Shine via the Misfit online store.
- - Second, you will earn a single $25 credit for each friend that purchases a Shine using your invite.
- - Third, you have 5 invites to send. That means you can earn up to $125 in credit ($25 x 5)- that'll get you a free Shine, or an entire set of upgrades!
Each time your invite is used, you will get a notification in the Shine app and a $25 credit will be applied to your account.
In the Shine app, you can go into Settings > Referral Credit and check your credit balance. If you have credit, then you can generate a coupon code that can be used on the Misfit online store. Note that you can only use one coupon per transaction, so in order to maximize your savings, wait until you've accrued enough credit for the item you wish to purchase before generating a coupon code.
Your coupon code will expire on Mar 31st 2014. The invites that you send to your friends will expire on Jan 31st 2014.
